Dr Lizet Louw-Marais is a neurosurgeon with a passion for improving the quality of life of her patients. She has a special interest in spinal surgery, kyphoplasty, brain tumour surgery and the management of brain and spinal trauma. She also specialises in the management of intracranial and spinal infections.
She initially qualified as a pharmacist from the University of North West in 2000 and worked as a Drug Utilisation Research Pharmacist at a medical aid company before deciding to study medicine. She completed her undergraduate medical training in 2011 at the University of Pretoria.
After working at the Pietermaritzburg Hospital Complex, the Klerksdorp Tshepong Hospital Complex and Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, she qualified as a Neurosurgeon in 2022, earning her master’s from the University of Cape Town with distinction – like her previous two degrees.
Her most recent previous position was at Groote Schuur Hospital where she trained as a registrar in the department of Neurosurgery. She was promoted to the Chief Registrar for a year and then worked as a fellow in spine surgery and brain tumour surgery.
Now at Mediclinic Hermanus, Dr Louw-Marais’s extensive experience is at the disposal of patients in the popular seaside resort town and Walkerbaai, as well as the Overstrand area between Somerset West and Mossel Bay, and beyond. She also aims to provide after hour services to manage any emergency neurosurgical conditions.
“I am a compassionate and highly motivated person who enjoys challenges. Working hard and maintaining the high standards of professional and ethical care are part of my personality,” she says.
Out of work hours, the married “mom of three cats” relishes time spent with family and friends, exploring nature and indulging her creativity with arts and crafts.
